History of Marsh Quilters

Marsh Quilters is a group of quilters who originally came together because of a common interest in patchwork, quiltmaking, applique, embroidery and related subjects.

Curiously, Marsh Quilters didn't begin as a craft group - but rather as part of the "Save The Walthamstow Marshes Campaign". In 1979 a group of women who supported the campaign began meeting in their homes to create a quilt. This quilt, shown below, was eventually used by the Walthamstow Marsh Society to promote the marshes as an educational resource.

From this humble beginning,

other quilts were made to

raise funds for a variety of

charities and the Marsh

Quilters were born.

Our aims are to work

together as a group to share

our ideas and enthusiasm for

quilting and patchwork. Not

only do we aim to promote

the area of quilting and

patchwork locally, when we

can we aim to apply our craft

to helping local charitable

causes.
